Administrative Professionals Week: History and Gift Ideas

social-2Did you know that Administrative Professionals Week is right around the corner? It’s been celebrated the last full week of April each year in the U.S. since 1952, and it’s now a worldwide holiday. It was created to highlight the key role that support staff play in all businesses. While Administrative Professionals have their own designated holiday on the Wednesday of that week, the entire week is also dedicated to honoring administrative professionals.

A Historic Holiday

When the U.S. entered World War II in 1941 after an attack on Pearl Harbor, it led to an increased need for skilled administrative staff around the country. The National Secretaries Association was then formed (later changed to the International Association of Administrative Professionals, or IAAP), and they focused on recognizing staffer contributions, bringing in more applicants, and supporting continued staff development.

The IAAP, the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, and various office supply manufacturers sponsored the very first National Secretaries Week in 1952. The name was later changed to Administrative Professionals Week/Day in 2000 to reflect terminology changes in the industry.

The Engine of Business

Some say that administrative professionals are the driving force behind most businesses. These individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes, and without them, it would be tough for most companies to succeed. This holiday is the perfect time to show appreciation to the staff members who make up the backbone of most organizations. Employers often hold events to express their gratitude for their employees this week. Another excellent way to mark Administrative Professionals Day and Week is via giving flowers or special gift items.

Administrative Professionals Day falls on Wednesday, April 22 for this year (2015), but Administrative Professionals Week runs from Monday, April 20 to Friday, April 24. This week is an ideal opportunity to show your staff just how appreciated they are. Gift giving ideas might include:
Spring Bouquets

Spring flowers are in full bloom by the end of April. Why not surprise your staff with some gorgeous spring bouquets? From tulips to daisies to hydrangea, flowers can show how much you care.
